Owain Kelly is a Welsh composer, musician and audio-visual artist based in Manchester, UK.

His electronic audio-visual outfit NO CEREMONY/// released their self-titled debut album in 2013 to extensive critical acclaim. Twice becoming the most blogged-about artist in the world and championed by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Zane Lowe and Huw Stevens, they toured internationally with artists such as Foals, Crystal Fighters and New Build, supported Pixies at their 2013 iTunes Festival Headline slot in London's Roundhouse and won LA Times' Best Newcomer award at SXSW 2013.

His introduction to media composition was the feature-length score for Cuban psychological horror '¿Eres Tú, Papá?' ('Is That You?'), which went on to win multiple festival awards including Best Promising Director at Sitges and Jury's Choice at BIFAN. He has since worked on various film, tv and theatre projects supported by BAFTA, BFI, Arts Council, Sky Arts and BBC New Creatives, and his work on Icelandic Folk Horror 'Krampuss' ('Þið kannist við') - broadcast Primetime Christmas Day on RÚV Iceland - earned him a 'Best Composer' nomination at HorrOrigins Festival.

His music has been heard in British film 'Quartet', MTV's 'The Hills', 'Made In Chelsea' and 'Catfish', as well as in advertising campaigns for Samsung, L’Oréal and the Irish Tourism Board. He has collaborated with artists Joey Santiago (Pixies), Mike Joyce (The Smiths) and James Vincent McMorrow, and has been commissioned to remix acts such as John Grant, alt-j and The 1975.

Alongside his composition work, Owain is currently developing a musically-driven theatre production entitled 'Blessed, Tryna Shake This Curse' with collaborator Simon Manyonda (Rye Lane, Eric, Pennyworth) and a multidisciplinary arts project entitled 'GULFF' that explores the auditory byproducts of late capitalism — robocalls, hold music, 24-hour rolling news reports, social media artefacts, advertising jingles — with NYC-based visual artist and musician Tod Lippy (Esopus, My Fellow Americans).

"It pleases us no end that they should, in this, the age of the tyranny of the voice, make as their leitmotif, their trademark, the non-voice, the machine cry, the studio whimper, that they should prioritise the inhuman when elsewhere we are being overwhelmed with “passion”. - The Guardian

"A sensational collection of songs that affect every ounce of your physical body and mental state. It’s a full-body sensory overload, capable of tearing your heart and mind asunder." - 8/10 The Line Of Best Fit

"Enigmatic and experimental pop Manchester trio No Ceremony/// release their debut LP on their own NOC/// label. It's a daring, boldly singular record that somehow pulls off the neat trick of pushing the parameters of pop music while also being brilliantly accessible, a gorgeous, haunting, and distinctive statement of intent which also happens to be filled with some of the most exquisite songs you're likely to hear in a while, with the sorts of melodies which will lodge firmly in your head for days." - Rough Trade

"'NO CEREMONY///' is unfailingly forward-thinking. There is youthful energy and enthusiasm bursting from every part of this record, and whilst there are only nine tracks here, ideas are present in abundance." - 7/10 This Is Fake DIY

"While waiting to find out more, we console ourselves with the few pieces posted on Youtube. Vague, fluid, fascinating, phosphorescent, these little lights in the night are as enigmatic and their discrete author(s). Like a volcano under the ice." - Les InRocks

"Weʼve got absolutely no information on this band, but the music ... itʼs just stunning." - Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1

Blessed, Tryna Shake This Curse (2024)
PROJECT: Theatre Production || ROLE: Composer, Audio Production, Visual Designer || CREATOR: Simon Manyonda

BLESSED tells the story of ‘The Kid’, a nerdy black teen, dreaming of being an actor in the suburbs of 2000s Croydon. The Kid has to swerve the pitfalls of growing up in white culture whilst navigating the ways his ‘Huxtable life’ sets him apart. He lives vicariously through the TV screen, casting himself as Dawson and hoping to win the heart of his very own Joey Potter. When his fantasy life comes into conflict with a boy at school, his mirror image on a very different path, The Kid’s world is shocked into stark reality. The show takes the form of a theatrical mixtape performed live by actor/creator Simon Manyonda and accompanied by his band, musician Owain Kelly. With an original score inspired by garage, jungle, and naughties pop, it’s a heartfelt and uplifting show about feeling out of step with your peers, navigating the responsibilities of privilege and learning the lessons of humility.

Performer/Creator: Simon Manyonda
Music: Simon Manyonda & Owain Kelly
Audio Production: Owain Kelly
Dramaturgy & Direction: Jessica Siân

Simon’s recent work includes Rye Lane for Searchlight Pictures and Northern Comfort for Netflix. His extensive theatre work includes Word Play for the Royal Court; The Clinic for The Almeida and Barbershop Chronicles for the NT. Simon performed in Testament by Tristan Bernays at Vault Festival 2017. Blessed, Tryna Shake This Curse is his debut solo work.

Owain's electronic outfit NO CEREMONY/// toured worldwide supporting Foals, Pixies and Crystal Fighters and won LA Times' Best Newcomer award at SXSW 2012. He composed the original score for award-winning Cuban psychological horror feature '¿Eres Tú, Papá?' ('Is That You?') and has since worked on various films funded by BAFTA, BFI, Arts Council, Sky Arts and BBC New Creatives.

Jessica’s new play Thread, was developed on Sheffield Theatre’s Bank Cohort and long listed for the 2023 Women’s Prize; she is on commission to Layered Reality developing VR immersive show Skychaser. She was commissioned by Southwark Playhouse to adapt sellout hit Kiki’s Delivery Service and her solo show Work Bitch won Show of the Week at Vault Festival 2019.

On February 14th, 2012, our new band self-released a track called hurtlove on a limited run of 10" vinyl, with no idea how far it would take us. On March 23rd, 2014, we came off a 2 1/2 year touring stint to spend some time in the studio writing a second record, with no idea how long it would take us. On February 14th, 2022, ten years since that first release, we're pleased to share it with you now.

To mark the occasion, and as way of reward for all your patience, we offer it here to you as a free download; to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has ever supported us since that time; came to shows, bought the record. And to everyone who still asks what happened to us. We remember. We get your messages. We love you.

We know we've been mysterious in the past but this isn't a form of marketing. Right now, we have no current intention of touring and no promo scheduled for the release. Since announcing the record a few weeks ago, we're touched that so many of you have asked about physical formats. We really are happy for you to download the pay-what-you-feel digital release for free and share it with whoever you want; but if it makes enough money, we will use the funds to press a limited run of vinyl.

Mostly, we just wanted to make sure we said a proper thank you for anyone and everyone still out there waiting.

Special thanks goes to Elizabeth Crompton, Dave Sanderson, Christopher Poole and Chloe Melbourne. Without your creative sparks and collaborative patience, none of this would have been possible.

If you like the record and want to support us personally, we've also linked our new project below. You can also send us an email. We'd love to hear from you and promise we'll reply.

Otherwise. Thank you. See you in ten.

"NO CEREMONY/// still sound like the future of pop music, still have that ability to make your heart soar and your tear ducts moisten." - The VPME

This is a reflection on the PTSD caused by the broken ‘justice’ system on both people in prison, and prison officers. Referencing the immoral and inhumane IPP sentences (Imprisonment for Public Protection) and how the systems of power perpetuate rigid gender norms that cause harm. “The corridors of power imprison physically and psychologically”

Symphony For Her Website (2022)
PROJECT: Commission || ROLE: Artist, Producer

Symphony For Her Website is a collaboration born of conversations between composer and music producer Owain Kelly, songwriter and composer James Williams (Tey \\\ Fir), and director & screenwriter Stacy Cochran, following their work on short film Heartbeat of Squirrels (2020) and experimental feature-length A Year On Ice (2023).

Sharing a love of teasing at the expectations of their respective fields, and not wanting to stop their collaborations after a year of mid-pandemic transatlantic video calls, their conversation turned to Stacy’s newly designed website and why this couldn’t be something more.

The result is this EP of four pieces, inspired by the four-part symphonies of the classical tradition, loosely interpreted through the lens of two musicians with a history of experimental electronic pop in NO CEREMONY/// and creatively shaped by Stacy’s insightful directorial hand.

Mixed by Dave Sanderson at Apex Park Studio, Sheffield
